Change of State by Nick and Max Cain

Update: It worked! Despite some battery problems, which limited us to night-time operation, the overall project was a success. The comments journal contains dozens of positive entries and the electronics, lighting and structure all worked well. We cleaned up the piece, accounted for all tools and took it all back home. No one got hurt, everyone had fun.

Change of State will consist of a metal bench and shade structure placed in the deep Playa. During the heat of the day, participants will find a cool, shaded place to take in a view of the festival. At night, the bench will be warm to the touch and protected from the wind. The bench will be cooled and heated by thermoelectric heat pumps powered by solar cells. We hope this project will provide a comfortable place to sit while it draws attention to one of our most basic human concerns -- keeping cool and warm -- and the many ecological and social issues that go along with that.
